Modafinil vs. Armodafinil – What’s the difference?
In scientific terms, Modafinil contains both the S-enantiomer and R-enantiomer (mirror images) of the Modafinil molecule. It is 50% S-Modafinil and 50% R-Modafinil.
Armodafinil is only the R-enantiomer. This makes it an ‘enantiopure’ drug – a drug with a single enantiomer. The R-enantiomer is the more active half and this accounts for the difference between the two.
In practice the effects are the same but Armodafinil is stronger and longer-lasting.
This means that you will get the same effect from a lesser dose of Armodafinil compared to Modafinil, or a greater effect from the same dose. This analysis of three studies confirms that concentrations of Armodafinil are higher in the body later in the day compared to Modafinil.
From my experience I would say that ~75mg of Armodafinil is about equal to 100mg of Modafinil.
In fact, other circumstantial factors can make as much of difference for your experience than the difference between the actual drugs. These factors include:
- Whether you take the drug on an empty stomach or with food
- How much you slept the night before
- What time of day you took the drug
Essentially, I wouldn’t worry too much about the difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil. Just expect Armodafinil to have slightly stronger and longer-lasting effects.
Is there a difference between generic and prescription Modafinil? (Provigil vs. Modalert)
I have tried both Provigil and Modalert (and Modvigil), and from my experience there is no difference between generic and prescription modafinil. They are in effect exactly the same.
If someone were to take Modalert one day and then a week later take Provigil, I’m convinced that they would not know which was which.
Is there a difference between generic and prescription Armodafinil? (Nuvigil vs. Waklert)
I have tried both prescription and generic Armodafinil (Nuvigil and Waklert and Artivigil). Again there is no noticeable difference between the them.
What should I know before I try Modafinil?
I always recommend that people take Modafinil very early in the morning, to avoid being kept up late at night. Different people have different sensitivities to the drug – personally I find the ‘wakefulness’ part to be very strong. Others experience it differently and can take Modafinil mid-morning and sleep just fine. But if it’s your first time, I would recommend you take it early just to be safe.
I would also recommend you start with a relatively low dose of 100mg or less. If you have 200mg pills, cut one in half and take 100mg. If you are very sensitive to stimulants and it is your first time, you may want to try just 50mg.
